Sheltered English can replace the 9th grade English credit (ENG I). - ESL I is for students with proficiency 0. This is an introductory course for students who have little knowledge of the English language. Stress is put on oral work and vocabulary building.
- ESL II is for students with proficiency 1. It is a continuation of ESL I. Although oral exercises are included, the emphasis is on written grammar and verb conjugation. Vocabulary building, or course, is included.
- ESL III is for students with proficiency 2. It is a conversational class that includes a strong writing component. Telephone and public etiquette is practiced along with other conversational situations. In addition, students write paragraphs and compositions and work in various revision groups, pairs, round robin, etc.
- ESL IV is for students with proficiency 2+ or 3-. This is an extension of ESL III with additional writing assignments and outside work. Vocabulary development and composition writing are stressed.
- Sheltered English is a new class being taught at Warren Central High School. This is a transitional English class to prepare students for high school literature. Primary emphasis is placed on grammar, vocabulary building and composition. The student is also introduced to representative literary works.
